Welcome to Community Papers of New England

I am very proud and honored to be President of Community Papers of New England. It was just over 16 years ago that I started to publish the Yankee Pennysaver. I had no prior experience in the paper or shopper industry. I didn’t even possess advertising experience. How did I gain the expertise, knowledge and tools to operate and grow my business? It was by hard work, trial-and-error, and, most importantly, by joining this wonderful association.

The first conference that I attended, I went alone. In retrospect, I was foolish not to bring my one employee, but I was uncomfortable. I didn’t know anyone or what to expect. My first conference was remarkable. I had never attended a conference where so many industry professionals were willing to share their years of experience with the new kid on the block. Doug, Dan, Peter, John Carol, Deb and others, all veterans in the industry, immediately made me feel welcome. They were eager to share their knowledge with me. I immediately felt part of a larger group of professionals who were committed to helping me succeed. Peter Stevens urged me to enter the 3 Minute Idea Exchange. Although I didn’t win, several publishers came up to me afterwards and said that my idea was really good and asked me to send them some materials. I felt great because I had an idea that others experienced in this industry hadn’t thought of. And that is what is so wonderful about this organization. The fact that there is a free flow of information and new ideas among colleagues who are committed to helping each other succeed.

Fast forward 16 years. I am now the President of this terrific organization. The world and the economy have certainly changed. This organization is more important to you as a New Englander than ever before. We are an association of professionals in the same industry in the same geographic area who are committed to helping our industry and each other through these tough times. The ability to participate in topical conference calls, attend meetings and conferences, make use of the audits and AdMall, or just pick up the telephone and brainstorm an idea or problem with others in your industry is priceless.

I urge you all to participate. If you are not already a member, join. Get your employees involved. Call me or anyone else in the association with your issues. We are here to help. You don’t have to go it alone.

I look forward to seeing you at the Spring Conference, on May 22 & 23 in Providence, Rhode Island
